Fluxed ADW 1.2 Update Released

Hey peeps:

Just through up a small update to Fluxed on the market. It fixes the seemingly ever-changing SCVNGR actvity, and adds a chunk of new icons to the mix! Check out the new page for it by clicking on the link at the top of the site to see a complete changelog, as well as a QR code and AppBrain links to share with all your ADW.Launcher-using friends!

Still to come:
-ADW Iconpack – coming extremely soon!
-MDPI – coming probably right after that!
-Standalone icons (i.e., for LauncherPro) – focusing on ADW.Launcher for now, but don’t think I won’t be releasing them to other launchers. Hey, why not try ADW until they are released?

Until next time!
-Asher

Fluxed Update 1.0.1

Hey everyone:

So last night I sent out a small update which set secondary buttons to default, fixed Galaxy Dialer icon, updated the color of the ROM Manager icon, and fixed the SCVNGR icon issue (which hilariously is broken again with its new update).

I have received emails from you all and is what is planned soon:

-Search widget theme – I have a full themed widget I was going to include but I realized how awful it looked and decided not to include it for the initial release. I am working on a brand new one that will complement the theme much better.

-Icon pack – I am also working on adding this for users who want more control over the theme. I want to add a few more icons to the mix before implementing this, but rest assured it is coming very soon.

Also, an Angry Birds icon is coming. Don’t worry!

I am working on creating a changelog which will probably have its own page on this site for easy access.

That’s all for now – please comment here, on Twitter, or email me from the market page. I read them all and, depending on the email, will answer back! I want this theme to work for everyone.

Stay classy,

Asher

PS – I have a friend with a Captivate to test Samsung icons on, but I have no idea if my Droid 2/X icons are correctly set. If you have one of these phones and use my theme, please let me know whether the basic apps were changed (dialer, contacts, what have you). Thanks!

Here We Go: Fluxed ADW.Launcher Theme Released to Android Market

My last post hinted to this…my ADW theme is finally ready for its release. Titled Fluxed, it tries to differentiate itself from the regular randomness of Android icons by unifying them to one style while keeping the uniqueness of each app. This theme focuses on subtle colors which will look great on simple wallpapers. At the same time, the custom icons have enough body to hold their own against the craziest backgrounds. Right now over 100 apps are supported, with many more to come.

Unfortunately the theme only supports HDPI phones (such as the Droid 1, Nexus One, and other high-end Android devices with larger screens), but MDPI is coming very soon.

I have been working on this theme for a while now, but like any fully-supported app, I’m not done with it. More app icons will be added, along with tweaks and graphic tuneups.

I hope you enjoy Fluxed – please leave me comments here and on twitter as to what you like, dislike, and want added.

You can find the theme on the Android Market. You can also scan the QR code below to bring you to the market page!

Beautiful Widgets Skin Released

Hello everyone!  I haven’t updated in a while, but I have been diligently working on a few Android-related projects, including theme design for the Bugless Beast ROM, an ADW.Launcher theme, and a few skins for Beautiful Widgets.  While the bigger projects are still in the works, I have released one of my BW skins for everyone to enjoy!

This first skin is called Epic-Justice, and has an action-comic feel to it.  Check out a screenshot below:

If you would like to check it out (assuming you already have Beautiful widgets), open the forecast, then hit menu and Clock Skins.  Under the Downloads tab, scroll all the way to the bottom to find it.

Hope you all like it!  My other works are on their way to completion, so check back here for screenshots and updates.  I also am active on Twitter as the widget on the home page displays.  Please follow me!

Onlive Brings PC Gaming to the Cloud

OnLive

OnLive, a new gaming service, has finally been released for use to the public.  The company offers a unique way to enjoy high-end gaming on mid and low-range computers, including Windows, Mac, and iPad platforms.  The service, using a browser plugin that is opened as a separate program, allows users to stream graphics-heavy games over a 5mb (or higher)  wired internet connection.

I managed to preregister for the service, which allowed me to receive a full year of complementary play and one free full game.  OnLive offers demo time, rental, and full play options for users.  The biggest worry for both consumers and OnLive was latency (lag); since the games are streamed from server stations to the users’ computers, there might be a space of time between activating a control and the reaction in the game.  After playing a few games, I found that the there was at times a small lag in between the movement my mouse made and the reaction on-screen.  It was most apparent during an instant action (no one was playing multiplayer) game in Unreal Tournament III.  Of course, this is a very fast-paced game.  But with more and more users coming online, OnLive will hopefully tweak its cutting-edge servers to perform at the highest level.

OnLive has done a wonderful job with the menu system.  Using the mouse or the arrow keys allows you to navigate between the different sections, including the marketplace, the arena, purchased content, and “Brag Clips.”  The arena displays windows of all the current user sessions and allows others to watch both single and multiplayer matches from the view of the player.  ”Brag Clips” are recorded shorts players can share and are meant to display gaming moments they deem important – hilarious kills, boss battles, first deaths, etc.  Despite the sheer number of videos playing in the background of these menus, moving around is seamless.  Selecting videos throws you straight in, without any loading time.  In fact, the only loading time I experienced outside of the games themselves was activating a game to play.

Apart from the latency qualms, OnLive might have some trouble attracting users with the current lineup of titles.  The list of titles is short and most games aren’t that new.  It was nice to see some popular games like F.E.A.R. 2 and Borderlands, but I’m sure interested gamers have already played them.  When the service was announced earlier this year was I excited to see Crysis being used as a test game.  Fast forward to today and I am disappointed to see the game not available for play.  I figure many (including myself) have not been able to play this due to the high requirements needed.

Many commenters on popular tech blogs are not interested in OnLive because you do not own any of the games you purchase through the site.  While I agree that it may not be the best situation for purchased games, OnLive also allows gamers to rent titles for a certain number of days.  Just as Instant Queue movies have been a popular way to enjoy Netflix movies, the OnLive service might be a good way to instantly enjoy gaming alongside the mail rentals of firms like GameFly.  That is, if OnLive manages to expand its library.

Overall, OnLive has some potential.  Offering a serious gaming service to the majority of computing platforms – spotlight on Mac machines – OnLive brings high-end gaming to budget laptops and desktops.  If the company can add popular new titles and push itself through the tirades of Steam fanboys, it might have a chance to cement itself in gamers’ minds as a real cloud-gaming service.

Well Now…

…It seems that I haven’t updated this weblog in a bit – I have been busy attempting to find a marketing co-op for the summer.  Been having some luck, but nothing has been finalized yet, so the search continues.

I have also been helping TotalSmartphone with a site refresh – I can’t say when the shift will happen, but when it does I hope it will bring in more people.  We’re all delighted to discuss mobile tech and attempt to answer any questions you might have!

Still here in sunny, breezy Rochester…
